Soccer – or as many countries call it, football, is the most popular sport in the world. Every continent has embraced it – each with its own top leagues, every one with a hugely passionate fanbase and each one has its own unique style of play.
But what league is the best in the world? For Canadian soccer fans, yes, we have the Canadian Premier League, but it would hardly be considered the ultimate – and it doesn’t have the prestige and authority of many of the others. So, here we look at which one really is the best…

The English Premier League - EPL
For lots of people all over the world, including Canada and the US, the English Premier League is the ultimate footballing league. The league is watched all over the world, offers some of the most intense competition, and has serious financial backing.
This is a league where any team can beat another on any given day. Liverpool could beat Everton 2-0, Everton could then beat Tottenham 3-1 and Tottenham could then beat Liverpool 3-2. This means it’s seriously unpredictable and can make for seriously exciting matches. Unlike some leagues that are dominated by one or two teams every year, the EPL always has fierce battles – for both the title and relegation – which means there are always plenty of football betting markets to choose from.

Because of its global kudos, it obviously attracts talent from all over the world – including players like Kevin De Bruyne, Mo Salah, and Erling Haaland. It has broadcast deals in practically every country in the world, making it arguably the most widely watched and followed league worldwide – which is one of the many reasons that EPL clubs have such deep pockets – and they get to sign world-class players and coaches and keep the league at world-class standard.
La Liga - Spain
Then, there’s La Liga, the home of arguably two of the biggest clubs in soccer history—Real Madrid and Barcelona. These teams alone make La Liga a must-watch. Real Madrid is, statistically, the most successful club in European history, while Barcelona is also another dominant force.
It’s a league that’s known for having a more technical style of play – and is very much about possession and skill. It’s attracted players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and rising stars like Vinícius Jr. and Pedri – so, just like the EPL, it’s another huge league for top talent.

If you’re a soccer fan who appreciates skilful and tactical soccer, then it may be that you prefer La Liga over the physically tougher EPL.
Serie A - Italy
We also have to mention Italy’s top-flight league – and while it’s definitely had its ups and downs in recent years, Serie A is still one of the best leagues in the world.
Italian clubs, in general, are known for their defensive organisation and strategic gameplay, making it great if you’re someone who likes a more methodical approach to the game. This is a league with teams like Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan who are massive in European football.

Bundesliga - Germany
Germany is a country renowned for its footballing skills, so it’s hardly surprising they have a footballing league that reflects it. The Bundesliga is surprisingly sometimes overlooked, but in our opinion, it’s still one of the most exciting leagues in the world – and the fans love it.
German soccer is all about fast-paced action, so you can expect seriously entertaining matches with lots of goal scoring. It’s a league that’s a literal breeding ground for young talent – and clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are famous for producing world-class players. And although Bayern Munich has won the most league titles in recent years, it’s still very much a competitive league outside of their dominance.

Other Top Contenders
Some of the others that shouldn’t be overlooked include:
- Ligue 1 France: The league may be dominated by PSG, but it’s developed huge talents like Kylian Mbappé.
- Major League Soccer – MLS: North American’s up-and-coming league is definitely ready to become a legit player in the world of soccer.
- Canadian Premier League – CPL: We can’t completely ignore it… it might still be relatively young, but it’s definitely showing a lot of promise as Canada’s top league.
So, there you have it. Whether you want to stick to the CPL or want to go for something a little more international, these are the biggest and best football… or soccer… leagues in the world!
